Our client, Relativity Space, is building humanity’s multiplanetary future. They invented a new approach to designing, printing and flying rockets, starting with Terran 1, the world’s first entirely 3D printed rocket. To reflect their level of excellence, we transformed an office park warehouse into their new headquarters: an immersive experience that conveys awe to their visitors while inspiring innovation in their employees.

The project was delivered during the COVID-19 lockdown and comprises 19,600 sq ft across two stories: a 16,300 sq ft lobby experience and two-story office remodel, and a 3,300 sq ft café and break area on the factory floor. Guided by Relativity’s mission, the design embodies the company’s core values: wonder, audacity, relentlessness, and humanity.

Visitors are immediately transported from the office park to a sleek, double-height lobby that fuses clean lines with organic forms, and uses the company branding as punctuation. The juxtaposition of hard edges and surfaces with curvaceous, natural materials creates visual and textural queues that give every space its own rhythm. Biophilia was also important with planting generously distributed to frame the work areas and connect users to the earth and natural environment. The design accounted for both rapid growth and adaptability throughout; the space plan anticipated an additional 50+ employees and allowed flexibility in all of the lounge and breakout spaces as well as the cafe area where all of the furniture is moveable and reconfigurable. By contrasting intimate spaces with vast openness, the design captures both where we are and infinite possibilities of where we can go.
